How to Choose the Right Mattress (And Make the Pipe Dream of the Perfect Night’s Sleep a Reality)
Ah, the perfect mattress… taking the risk of sounding rather weird, I must say that I feel like I can write a poem on the matter. Especially on Monday morning, after what is supposed to be a weekend of good night’s sleep, rest and energy refilled organism. Well, it isn’t. It’s a Monday of back pain, crankiness and a pretty scary desire to punch someone because of that needle that constantly pinches you in the back of your neck. And the story is the same pretty much every other day of the rest of the week! Oh the frustrations…
Having described my most inner feelings about a matter as soulless as a mattress, I believe it’s the proper time and place to expose my opinion on the mattress price. You see, when you finally find the soft, but firm enough surface made of the material that doesn’t smell like sweat after just a month and made in a shape that fits your bed frame perfectly, the smile on your face is wiped away fast and very brutally by the sight of the price tag. Just when you think: “oh my God thank you, thank you, thank you so much for sending me an answer to my prayers” the situation changes and all of a sudden you feel like the One up there simply decided to mock you a little. Your strong pipe dream obviously can’t turn into reality. Or can it?
Decide you’re going to buy
Now, in frustrating situations like the one when you see your perfect match in the form of a mattress and it’s so expensive it makes you want to cry in front of the entire store, the first thing you should do is not go to a store. Instead, sit at home, take your laptop and start searching online. That way, you have the option to choose your preferred range of mattress price and dodge the bullet. And yes, this way you’re going to finally buy one.
Check return policies
Because you probably won’t be able to try out the mattress, the thing that most interests you is the return policy if just in case, you get disappointed again. See what are your options: does the store offer a full refund if not satisfied, or a credit for choosing another mattress? Also, how much time you have to make the return? A month, two months?
Know exactly what you want (sure you do already) and don’t settle for less
When you know what you want clear and simple, it would be rather hard to be tricked into buying something that’s obviously not your primary goal. Like a box spring. That thing constantly gets sold along with mattresses, (and mainly when people want just mattresses) results in plummeting prices! Be very concise, and since you won’t be able to show your very, very serious facial expression to the sales person, call customer services and ask whether you can have the mattress you want without the additional extras. And no, you don’t want ‘another type that’s almost the same as the one you asked for‘ because you’ll be back on the start: with the pinching needle in the neck.
And yes, be aware of commercials
Sorry for being so dramatic, but I feel like someone should start a riot against these companies that use one of humans’ most intrinsic need (sleeping, duh) to maximise their beloved profits through cheap and crooked TV BUY-THIS-NOW commercials and leave us wondering and deluded just like a teenage girl being cheated by a sleazy freshman who hasn’t evolved enough to hit on girls his own age. What do you mean ‘get the quality sleep you so need for the humble price of my monthly salary?!’
So, to wrap this sweet little love story up, do not compromise on the quality of your sleep just because the mattress that you know will give you the sleep of a lifetime costs as much as your monthly salary. Don’t give up and take the search on a whole other level even if it means searching the entire country.
